Exploring Murano & Burano

As I mentioned in my previous travel diary the second day in Venice started off pretty early, because me and my friend booked a guided boat tour to the beautiful islands Murano & Burano. We took the vaporetto at our stop San Tomá and about an half hour later, we arrived at our meeting spot near San Marco Zaccaria. It was extremely hot that day, so a boat ride was just what I needed to cool off a bit. The entire boat tour lasted for about 4,5 hours, which also gave us enough time to get back to Venice and stroll around San Marco for the remainder of the day.

EXPLORING MURANO

After a boat ride of a little over an half hour, we got to our first stop of the day which was the island Murano. Murano is also known as the Glass Island of Venice. Before we were given some free time to explore the island, we got a short presentation on the two techniques of making (and breaking) glass vases and sculptures. Pretty impressive to be honest! After the showcase, we were led into a showroom of tons and tons of sculptured art. Sadly it wasn’t allowed to take pictures, but take it from me.. some of the art works were marvelous (but also super expensive)! After buying a cute souvenir, me and my friend tried to make the most of what was left of the time we had left on the island.

EXPLORING BURANO

I think from the entire Venice trip, my visit to the Burano island was the thing I was most excited for. I’ve seen tons of pictures on Instagram and Pinterest of these colored row houses and I was just dying to see them for myself. When we arrived, it was already pretty packed which made me wonder how the locals feel about their living space being “invaded” every single day. Luckily our free time on Burano was a little longer than Murano, because there was just so much to see and so many pictures to take! What I found so surprising was how much resemblance I thought there was between parts of Burano and some parts of Curaçao. Almost made me feel like I was back home 🙂 I think if I’ll ever make it to Venice again, Burano will definitely be on the itinerary again. Because I just know I probably missed out on so many other alleys worth seeing.
